...It is useful for the complete local service for people with specific needs to be analysed in order to ascertain its strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps there are a number of core features that need addressing, and that the provision of a Self-Help/Support Group will not plug all the gaps in the service. One useful way to evaluate the current service is to organise an audit. There is a significant amount of NHS money put aside for audit, even when there are financial restrictions for direct patient services. The audit would give evidence for direction of expenditure by those who hold the purse strings, and would, significantly address qualitative issues of patient rehabilitation. It may also be worthwhile to visit other burns units nationwide to get ideas about how other authorities deal with the challenges that are faced by all service providers. This does not mean that services can be replicated across the UK - each area may have particular needs and conditions.
