The Chambers Dictionary is invaluable, and being large it is impossible to lose. Small pocket-sized dictioanries have a tendency to end up in the wrong pocket, the wrong drawer or the wrong case or bag. A big book is so much better.

The Cambridge Dictionary of American English is very useful for writers who work for american clients. Some website work requires that writers use American English spelling, so this is the book to use.
